Purple Heart Day Ceremony
The Military Order of the Purple Heart Chapter 730 held a Purple Heart Ceremony in cooperation with the City of Henderson in the Purple Heart Plaza located downtown. Speakers included Chapter 730 Commander Kenneth “Ken” Gonzales, Henderson Mayor Michelle Romero, US Representative Dina Titus and representatives from US Senator Cortez Masto, US Senator Jackie Rosen, and US Representative Susie Lee. The ceremony also included a reading of the list of Chapter 730 members who have passed away, with bell ringing for each name. The Veterans Action Foundation attended the event. Residents from the Southern Nevada State Veterans Home in Boulder City, NV attended the event. The ceremony ended with a performance of “Taps” by a trumpeter from T.A.P.P.S.
In 1782, General George Washington awarded the first purple hearts on August 7th to meritorious soldiers. The ceremony was a public gathering to honor purple heart award patriot recipients. Chapter 730 is organized under a Congressional charter for strengthening patriotism; keeping alive the achievements and memory of our country’s founders; teaching our citizenry in a loyal appreciation of the heritages of American citizenship; assisting, comforting, and aiding all needy and distressed members and their dependents; and giving needed hospital and service work through Veterans Administration certified service officers.
